4) The Greatest of the Prophets
The coming of Elijah clearly points to a message rather than a person.  But the message is conveyed by a person, a special person.  The power of the message emanates from the person who gives it.  John the Baptist was a special person (Luke 1:13-15).  The character of the messenger is the source for the power of the message.

I.  John was assailed with doubt - Matthew 11:2,3
    A) We have need to trust the promises of His Word - 2 Corinthians 1:20; 2 Peter 1:4
    B) There is room for doubt - Steps to Christ p. 105

II. John was humble in dress and deportment - Matthew 3:4; Matthew 11:7,8
Even the remnant are portrayed modestly - Revelation 12:1

III. John was a mighty prophet - Matthew 11:9-11
      A) Imbued by the Holy Spirit - Elijah was translated, John was martyred
      B) A strait testimony.  Calling evil for what it is - Luke 3:7,8
      C) A message calling for repentance and devotion to God
      D) A message that declares, "Behold, the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world."  John 1:29
