10) Assurance in Judgment

ASSURANCE IN JUDGMENT - JOHN 5:24-30
 
     The Scriptures teach the certainty of judgment and that it involves investigation and then God acts on verdict reached through the investigation .  Ecclesiastes 12:14 - the fact that God brings every secret thing whether good or bad is not really good news for us.  There are some people who think if you do more good things than bad you qualify for heaven.  Steps to Christ p. 62 says: "The condition of eternal life is just what it was in Paradise before the fall of our first parents - perfect obedience to the law of God, perfect righteousness."

I.   God provides an advocate in the judgment - 1 Timothy 2:5; Hebrews 7:25; 1 John 2:1,2
     A) Jesus is the God - Man advocate - Represents the Divine and the human
          Jewish court - the judge is deliberately biased towards the accused.  He is our elder brother, advocate and judge.
     B) His atoning sacrifice and sinless life in our place - John 5:24
          3 ingredients - Substitution, Representation, Imputation
          Christ has conquered sin, death, and the devil - John 12:30-33; 1 John 4:17

II. The judgment does not allow presumption.
     A) Not once saved always saved - 2 Corinthians 6:1; Revelation 3:11
     B) Cherished sin will destroy all the power of the gospel - Hebrews 3:12-14; Hebrews 6:4-6; Hebrews 10:26-29, 36-39; 2 Peter 2:20,21
     C) The judgment reveals the genuineness of the works - James 2:14-16
          Doing the right thing for the right reason - Romans 14:23
     D) The judgment reveals where the heart is - Matthew 6:19-21,24
          The heart must have enmity for sin and a genuine love for God.

III. Zechariah 3:1-4 applies to the closing of the day of atonement.  Testimonies Vol. 5 pp. 472-475
      1) The devil accuses
      2) Joshua is in filthy garments
      3) An Advocate rebukes the devil
      4) A change of raiment - a blotting our of record of sin
      5) The judgment lingers now because of His morals - 2 Peter 3:9
