7 - Vainglory vs. The King of Glory

     In Daniel 2 Nebuchadnezzar learns that God is wise and all-knowing.  In chapter 3 he learns that God has the power to deliver.  Here in chapter 4 he is to learn that God is sovereign, that He is in control of the affairs of men.

I.   He receives a warning in a dream - Daniel 4:4-27
     A.  Inability of sorcerers to interpret the dream - Daniel 4:7
     B.  Only Daniel can explain its meaning - Daniel 4:22-26
     C.  Daniel gives wise counsel - Daniel 4:27; Proverbs 16:18; 1 Corinthians 10:12

II.  Vanity led to forgetfulness and to God's judgments - Daniel 4:28-33
     A.  To forget God is disaster
     B.  Pride allows the devil to have access
     C.  God will finally bring judgment

III.  God's judgments can lead to repentance - Daniel 4:34,35
      But there is a judgment coming on spiritual Babylon in which there is no reprieve - Revelation 18:4

IV. The lessons of the story
     A.  The Most High rules over and above human government
     B.  Pride makes the boaster a beast, as once before it made and angel into a devil
     C.  The leading moral characteristics of Babylon and succeeding empires have been:
           1) ignorance of God; 2) idolatry; 3) cruel persecution of the saints
